RENO - Carson High's girls' basketball team scored 23 fourth-quarter points to break open a tight game and beat North Valleys 64-45 Tuesday afternoon in a Northern 4A contest.

Carson improved to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in league play entering today's game at Douglas.

"It was a close game for three quarters," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said. "We made a couple of adjustments defensively. We went zone in the second half and then we changed our zone in the fourth quarter.

"We showed good patience the entire second half. We scored 41 of our points in the second half. We got some real good looks. We just ran our offense. We weren't patient in the first half. We'd come down, make one pass and the ball would go up.''

Eliza Matley had 17 of her team-high 21 in the second half, while Kaitlyn Holmes had 11 of her 13 in the final 16 minutes. Emily Collins also reached double figures, scoring 10 points. Savannah Smith had seven, while Tiana McAllister-Daggs added six.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson boys lose thriller

RENO - When you turn the ball over 28 times and your best scorer goes without a field goal the first 16 minutes of the game, chances are you aren't going to win that game.

That's exactly what happened to the Carson boys, who fell behind by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, before losing a 58-57 thriller to North Valleys Tuesday afternoon.

Carson outscored the Panthers 25-13 to make it close, and at one point had a chance to tie the game with less than two minutes left but couldn't get over the hump.

"Rafe (King) didn't have a field goal in the first half and he got into early trouble," Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. "Ty (Keefer) also got into some foul trouble. Our bench helped get us back in the game."

Mendeguia said Charlie Banfield, who has seen limited action this year, scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds. Austin Pacheco came in for praise for "giving the team energy".

King did finish with 19, the bulk coming in the final period. Dylan Sawyers, playing on a sore ankle, was next with nine. Sage Smith and Bruce McIntosh added six and seven, respectively.
