PREPS: Carson wrestlers enjoy first-day success at Fernley

FERNLEY - After the first day of the Fernley Invitational wrestling tournament, 18 of 22 Carson wrestlers remain alive.

Going 2-0 and making it to the quarterfinals were: Kyle Sharp and Kaleb Wold at 106 pounds; Cole McCarthy at 126 pounds; Nicholas Lani at 132 pounds; Austin Brown at 138 pounds; Jordan Luhrs at 152 pounds; Nico Garcia at 182 pounds; Javier Torres at 195 pounds; Patrick Cooke at 220 pounds; and heavyweight Brayan Burgos.

Eight other wrestlers went 2-1 for Carson.

Coach Tim McCarthy said Wold, Cooke and Anthony Estrada all wrestled well for the Senators at the 17-team tournament.

McCarthy said the team was without its normal starters at 160 pounds and 170 pounds.

Brady Rivera, at 170 pounds, is out with an illness and Cody Cunningham at 160 pounds, just found Friday that an injury will keep him out for the rest of the year.


JV BASKETBALL

Dayton tops Fernley

DAYTON - The Dayton JV girls basketball battled to a 33-28 win over Fernley on home on Friday.

Ashley Sandy led the team with 10 points. Cheyanne Strong chipped in nine points.

Coach Ben Halverson credited his team for battling through the loss of two players to the varsity team.

Dayton, 11-6 overall and 2-1 in league, plays at 11 a.m. today at Lovelock.
