Carson-Douglas rivalry up for Best in Nevada, country

The Carson-Douglas rivalry has long been recognized as the best, and most-heated, rivalry in the area.

USA Today High School Sports has taken notice.

The publication is conducting its Rivalry Nation competition to determine the best high school rivalry in the country. The winners will receive $10,000 to be split between the school's athletic departments.

Carson and Douglas made the cut for the state competition, along with Bishop Gorman-Palo Verde and Moapa Valley-Virgin Valley.

"All of these rivalries represent decades, and sometimes more than a century, of the greatest competition, and plenty of bad blood," the USA Today website stated. "But now those communities must bind together to win a state (and perhaps a national) title."

The state competition runs through Dec. 3 with the winners advancing to the regional competition. Winners of four regions will be chosen Dec. 12 and the national competition runs through Dec. 19.

About the Carson-Douglas rivalry, USA Today stated, "Carson and Douglas are the only football-playing schools from nearby small towns just south of Reno, so there's a natural animosity between them. They've been playing each other in football since 1923 (Carson owns a 46-22-3 all-time lead) but the rivalry extends well behind the gridiron. The rivalry has been close as of late with the past three games being decided by a total of seven points."

Aside from the $10,000 prize, the winning rivalry will receive live coverage from USA Today during the 2013 football game.

The schools will also be presented with a trophy to be kept each year by the winning team.
