Region, Sierra football awards handed out

Three Carson High football players - junior lineman Aaron Cowee, punter Casey Wolfe and linebacker/safety Sage Smith - were named to the northern Nevada Division I regional football team.

Cowee, a key cog in the Carson offense, was named to the team as a guard. Smith led the team with four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Wolfe averaged 41.1 per punt.

Cowee, Wolfe and Smith also made the all-Sierra first team. They were joined by linebacker Austin Shaffer, who finished with 86 tackles.

Running back Colby Brown, tight end Luke Maher, tackle Joe Zinda. linebacker Stephan Sobkiewicz, defensive end Logan Krupp and defensive back Andrew Gutierrez were named to the second team.

Brown enjoyed an exceptional first varsity season, rushing for 771 yards and six scores, and catching nine passes for 89 yards. Maher caught 11 passes for 143 yards and three scores, Krupp had four sacks, an interception and 49 tackles. Gutierrez finished with 35 tackles, three passes defensed and an interception. Sobkiewicz had 67 tackles.

Quarterback Garrett Schafer, center Levi Carter and Joey Thurman were honorable mention selections.

Schafer completed 47 percent of his passes for eight scored and had a QB rating of 67. He led the Senators on game-winning drives against Reno and Reed. Thurman rushed for 152 yards and five scores, and he led the team in receiving with 27 catches for 453 yards and three scores.

Galena's Steve Struzyk was the Sierra League and Division I Coach of the Year, Douglas' Conner Peterson and Galena's Logan Harger were Co-Players of the Year in the Sierra League, while Damonte's Drew Smith was the Offensive Player of the Year. Galena's Mike Jones was Defensive Player of the Year and Galena teammate Eric Anderson was Lineman of the Year.

VOLLEYBALL

Virginia City swept the major awards in Division IV volleyball.

Jamie Poston was named the Player of the Year, Dennis Young was selected the Coach of the Year and the Lady Muckers won the sportsmanship award.

Corinna Obermayr was a first-team selection, while Nikki D'Agostino, Nicole Huffman and Rielly Strahan were second-team selections.

Hanna Rutherford of Sierra Lutheran was a first-team pick, while Jessica Olsen and Mckinze Tynes were second-team picks.

GOLF

Carson High's Heather Evans was a first-team all-Sierra selection and was a second-team regional pick this season.
