Senator Square: Students gear up for finals, Christmas break

Students will be busy studying all week for the final three days of the semester, during which they will finish with semester finals.

Wednesday will be B2, B4 and AB 55 finals. Thursday will be A1 and A3 finals, and students will be released early at 11:30 a.m.

On Friday, students will finish with A5 and B6 finals and again be released at 11:30 a.m.

School will break for two weeks and will resume Jan. 6. Senator Square will return with a column Jan. 13.

SCIENCE STUDENTS PRESENT

Zoey Gray, Shelby Brown, Lake Shank and Ethan Lopes made presentations at the Nevada EPSCoR program for undergraduate college students Nov. 16. EPSCoR stands for Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. It is funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA. The conference objectives were the stimulate research among undergraduate college students. Carson High students discussed their NSF funded Project-RECON results.

This event was held at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College. Other presenters included NASA, Nevada Space Grant Consortium, University of Nevada, UNLV, Great Basin College and Western Nevada College.

NEW-DRIVER EDUCATION

Western Nevada College will offer a 30-hour new-driver education class over winter break. The class will be 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The cost is $95. To register, go to www.wnc.edu/drivereducation or call 775-445-4458.

TEEN SUPPORT GROUP

Sophie Williams is running a teen support group with the help of counselor Mrs. Hendee for her senior project. There will be an informational meeting Wednesday in room 303. If you know of any students who are struggling with issues at school or home, please let them know about this meeting. If they have questions, see Mrs. Hendee in the counselor’s office.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s outstanding senior is Carson High School’s National Honor Society president. Alexandra Drozdoff has been a member of National Honor Society for three years, first serving as the sophomore class representative, then as the vice president, and now as the chapter president.

Alex has devoted numerous hours to ensuring that this club runs smoothly and has spent many hours planning and carrying out the community-service projects that this club sponsors. Alex is one of our truly exceptional seniors. She has a grade-point average of 4.6 and is enrolled in four advanced-placement classes. She hopes to pursue a career in law and is applying to several highly selective colleges, including Claremont McKenna College, Pomona College and Brown University.

In addition to excelling academically, Alex has made an outstanding contribution to CHS as a member of the varsity cross-country and track teams. She has represented CHS at both the regional and state championships in both sports and has been a member of the all-state academic teams each year.

In 2010, Alex qualified to run in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Alabama. She also is in the Advanced-Placement Government We the People Competition class that will compete this weekend at UNR.

CHS is proud of the contributions Alex has made to our school and community, and we wish her the best of luck.
