The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a number of summer swimming programs.

On Monday, a youth swim camp and junior lifeguard training begin at the indoor pool, 333 Sheckler Road.

The swim camp features swimming lessons from the Fallon swim team and will teach campers the fundamentals of the four competitive swimming strokes, flip turns and a coach will oversee diving off the starting blocks.

On June 14, swimmers will compete in a swim meet. The camp cost is $30 and runs from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

The junior lifeguard training sessions are sponsored by the American Red Cross and GuardStart programs. The course will prepare 10-14 year olds for future lifeguard training and employment as a lifeguard.

The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitude and skills they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism.

Participants receive a T-shirt, whistle, participant’s manual, Community CPR/AED and First Aid certification and free admission to the indoor swimming pool while participating in a summer internship, mentored by professional Lifeguard/Swim Instructor Staff.

Classes run from Monday through June 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Cost is $100 for first-time participants and $45 for returners.

The Churchill County indoor pool is joining thousands of children and families around the globe in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson on June 18 at 8 a.m. Participation is to help spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives.

Throughout the summer, a Stroke Performance Training program for teens and adults is offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-7 p.m. It is an opportunity to learn how to swim better, increase endurance, pump up existing workouts or prepare for a competitive event. Workouts are provided and a swim coach is available on-site for lap swim prices.

In addition, Take Away the Aches classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:45 a.m.

These classes increase flexibility, strength and coordination with low impact exercise to improve daily living. This class is excellent for people beginning an exercise program or for those dealing with limited motion, diabetes and arthritis.

All ability levels and non-swimmers may participate. Classes are $3 for drop-ins or $22 for eight classes.

On June 17, the first of three American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program lessons begin. Classes are 30 minutes and run for two weeks. Parent and Me classes and Levels 1-3 are offered at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Preschool Aqua and Levels 4-6 are offered at 10:35 a.m. and 5:30p .m.
