Show & Shine

The Lyon County Republicans’ first Show & Shine is May 18 on the Silver Stage High School baseball field in Silver Springs. Registration is 8-10 a.m. with judging 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and an awards ceremony to follow.

The entry fee is $30. Trophies will be given for each class plus many special categories. Raffles will be held all day and concessions available through the Silver Stage Nighthawk Booster Club. For information, call Cliff at 775-230-0583.

Iris Show

The Lahontan Garden Club non-competitive Iris Show is May 20-24 at the Churchill County Library, 553 S. Maine St. All Iris growers are invited to display their work, which will be accepted May 20 after 9:30 a.m. at the library and remain on display until 2 p.m. on May 24. Vases will be provided.

This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of Dee Furgeson, an avid gardener and a source of gardening knowledge.

Market opening and blood drive

Skyridge Outdoor Market opens May 23 at Skyridge Plaza at 150 E. Main St. in Fernley. United Blood Services will be on site that day for blood draws

Hours are 4-8 p.m. The market will be held every Thursday through Sept. 12, with the exception of the July 4 holiday.

ATV OHV Registration

Fallon Eagles Aerie, Auxiliary 1447, Eagle ATV Riders and the Churchill County Sheriff Office as a community service will hold a OHV Registration on May 25 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Eagles Hall, 7977 Reno Highway.

A Sheriff’s deputy and notary will be on hand to make the required VIN inspection and to notarize your signature as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. There is no charge, though owners need to bring their vehicle and drivers license.

Nevada’s new program to register and title off-highway vehicles (OHVs) Nearly all OHVs 1976 and newer must be registered and display a registration decal to be operated legally in the Silver State This includes ATVs, quads, dirt bikes, dune buggies, sand rails, snowmobiles and any motor vehicle used

On public lands, for the purpose of recreation, vehicles purchased prior to July 1, 2012 must be registered by July 1, 2013.

Fallon Farmers’ Collaborative

The Fallon Farmers’ Collaborative is sponsoring the Market at the Slanted Porch every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. from June 4-Sept. 17. One date change will be Labor Day weekend, when the market on Monday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in conjunction with the Labor Day Parade and Cantaloupe Festival.

The farmers’ market will feature local farmers, local crafters, local artists, local musicians and local artisan products. Some products included are local organic produce, local honey, local breads and local canned goods.

First Southern Baptist Church

First Southern Baptist Church, 900 S Taylor St, has morning worship on Sundays at 9 a.m., Bible Study for all ages at 10:15 a.m. and Sunday evening worship at 6 p.m.

Vacation Bible School for all ages and Adult VBS will be held out on the front lawn while the children attend indoors. VBS is June 10-14 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. A family day barbecue will be held on June 16.

May 13-25 sales — books 10 for $1; curtains, tablecloths, place mats and all shoes 50 percent off; VHS movies 10 for $1.

We are celebrating 26 years that our volunteers have served this community by recycling donations and using the proceeds to help more than 3,000 families with emergency needs and providing 72 scholarships to high school graduates and nursing students.

The Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit BCCH and other community events.

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed Sunday and Monday), 99 S. Nevada St. Donations accepted.

The non-profit organization raises funds to benefit BCCH and other health-related events.

Thrifty Finds

Thrifty Finds is a nonprofit store supporting Churchill County youth, 920 W. Williams Ave., Ste. 60A. Enter through Louie’s Dollar Plus.

Hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday-Sunday The store is closed Mondays.

Donations are accepted on the east side of the building during regular business hours.

Out of Egypt

Out of Egypt Thrift and Gift, providing for ongoing needs of food and hunger, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fallon Church of the Nazarene, 121 S. Allen Rd.

Donations are welcome during open hour. Please only provide clean and usable items.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada St., serves Friday night dinners open to the public.

On the first Friday each month the Sons of the American Legion has a fish fry. The second Friday is Bubba Burgers and all the fixings. The third Friday dinners have been cancelled until further notice. The fourth and fifth Fridays are steak dinners.

Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Street tacos, $1 each or four for $3, are served on Thursdays. On the fourth Thursday each month prime rib sandwiches and fixings are served.

Open to the public. We ask for a $5 donation.

Breakfast is served the second Sunday each month 8:30-10:30 a.m.

CCHS Class of ‘63 reunion

Churchill County High School’s Class of 1963 50-year reunion is June 29. CCHS Class of ‘73 reunion

The CCHS Class of 1973 will gather for its 40-year reunion the second weekend in July.

The first event is an Open-to-All-Alumni evening on July 12 at 6 p.m. at the Oasis Bowl. The evening will offer cocktails and “Bizzare Bowling Games” for those who want to join in the fun. All CCHS alumni are invited to attend and everyone will pay for their own food and beverages, as well as bowling. On July 13 at 5:30 p.m. the class of ‘73 will tour the Old High School. The same night, lass members will also gather at the Churchill County Museum starting at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7.

Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Fallon Tea Party meets the first and third Thursday each month at the library annex, 7 p.m., South Maine and Fairview (behind the bookstore).

The Oasis Squares, Fallon’s square dance club meets every Friday, 7-9 p.m., Highland Estates, 570 N. Sherman St.

The High Desert Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the second Saturday each month at noon at the VFW Hall, 405 S. Maine St.

CARE

Churchill County Parks and Recreation (CARE) after-school program is available for children ages 6-12. Each day includes homework, snack, fun and games as well as arts and crafts. The children also swim three days a week at the indoor pool.

Costs are $30 per week or $10 a day for drop-ins. Discounts are available for multiple children and monthly reservations.

To listen or share, Domestic Violence Support Group meetings are each Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. Call 775-423-1313 for meeting location.

Violence takes many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. Important steps to help yourself or someone you know in preventing, or stopping violence is recognizing the warning signs and by receiving support.

Churchill County Library Storytime is each Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m., in the library.

Dinner — The Fallon Elks Lodge, 93. W. Center St., serves dinner the first and third Friday of each month. The first Friday features a fish fry, and the third Friday night dinner varies.

Breakfasts — Breakfast is served on the last Sunday of the month from 8-10 a.m.

Volunteers needed

There are many adults living in Fallon who would like to learn to speak, read, write and understand English.

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada exists in five counties including Churchill. We need tutors living in Fallon to teach these adults.

We are a volunteer service organization operating on a no-cost-to-student basis, teaching one-on-one. If you are willing to make a difference in your community and help solve the language barrier, please call Donna at 775-246-8765 or 775-888-2021.

We train and provide instructional materials at no charge. Training at your convenience takes one hour. We will match you with an adult near you who is anxious to learn.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office. The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N.
