Drug forum

The Churchill Community Coalition presents Drug Darkness, a free community forum for parents to learn about on new club drugs, on May 22 from 5-9 p.m. at the Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way.

A presentation will be given at 6 p.m. by Prevention & Education Coordinator Stacy Ward and Commander Mac Venzon of the Reno Police Department. Hot dogs will be free as well as various raffle prizes, including a flat screen TV.

Senior Citizen Ball

The public is invited to the Senior Citizen Ball on May 22 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Churchill County Senior Center, 310 Court Street. Admission is free.

The CCHS jazz band will play Big Band Era music while members of the CCHS National Honor Society will provide decorations, refreshments and dance partners for those wishing to dance. Individuals and couples of all ages are invited to come listen to the music or dance.

Iris Show

The Lahontan Garden Club non-competitive Iris Show is May 20-24 at the Churchill County Library, 553 S. Maine St. All Iris growers are invited to display their work, which will be accepted May 20 after 9:30 a.m. at the library and remain on display until 2 p.m. on May 24. Vases will be provided.

This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of Dee Furgeson, an avid gardener and a source of gardening knowledge.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada is hosting Chief Mike Boats, a traveling Veteran’s PX, May 23-25. Hats, patches, pins, decals, flags, stickers, and bumper stickers will be available for any service member.

Market opening and blood drive

Skyridge Outdoor Market opens May 23 at Skyridge Plaza at 150 E. Main St. in Fernley. United Blood Services will be on site that day for blood draws.

Hours are 4-8 p.m. The market will be held every Thursday through Sept. 12, with the exception of the July 4 holiday.

ATV OHV Registration

Fallon Eagles Aerie, Auxiliary 1447, Eagle ATV Riders and the Churchill County Sheriff Office as a community service will hold OHV Registration on May 25 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Eagles Hall, 7977 Reno Highway.

A Sheriff’s deputy and notary will be on hand to make the required VIN inspection and notarize your signature as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. There is no charge, though owners need to bring their vehicle and drivers license.

The Churchill County High School Scholarship & Academic Awards Ceremony is May 28 at 1:15 p.m. in the theater to honor scholarship recipients and donors. All members of the community, students, and their families are invited to attend.

FRIENDS

FRIENDS Family Resource Center is having its annual Spring Into Summer Family Activity Night on May 29 from 4-6 p.m. at the Old Cottage School, 255 E. Stillwater Ave.

Among the fun-filled activities is scheduled that includes games, cotton candy, snow cones, a bounce house and prizes. The event is free of charge.

Lyon County Republicans

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee (LCRCC) will hold its next meeting on June 1, 2013 at the Commissioners’ Chambers, 27 S. Main St., Yerington, at 10 a.m.

The public is invited to learn more about grassroots politics and meet with Republican officials. Guest speaker Dave Hockaday will discuss firearms, the use of firearms and laws regulating the concealed possession of firearms, as well as the details of paperwork required to obtain a CCW permit.

Fallon Farmers’ Collaborative

The Fallon Farmers’ Collaborative is sponsoring the Market at the Slanted Porch every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. from June 4-Sept. 17. One date change will be Labor Day weekend, when the market on Monday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in conjunction with the Labor Day Parade and Cantaloupe Festival.

The farmers’ market will feature local farmers, local crafters, local artists, local musicians and local artisan products. Some products included are local organic produce, local honey, local breads and local canned goods.

First Southern Baptist Church

First Southern Baptist Church, 900 S. Taylor St., has morning worship on Sundays at 9 a.m., Bible Study for all ages at 10:15 a.m. and Sunday evening worship at 6 p.m.

Vacation Bible School for all ages and Adult VBS will be held out on the front lawn while the children attend indoors. VBS is June 10-14 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. A family day barbecue will be held on June 16.

GED Boot Camp

The Western Nevada College GED Boot Camp is a free prep class that begins July 30. Classes will be held noon-4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and continue four weeks. The boot camp will cover all areas of the GED exam and the official GED exam will be administered at the end of the course.

Registration is July 24-25 noon on the WNC Fallon Campus in the Pinon Building, Room 204.

Humboldt Shredders Thrift Store

The Fallon Humboldt Shredders is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

To make donations or to schedule a free pickup, call 775-217-0086 or 775-423-6140. Drop-offs are made at the store location. Proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and families in need through community voucher programs.

Community Service Thrift Shop

Community Service is located at 169 E. Center St. Hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays.

Sales May 20-25 — Coats, sweaters and sweatshirts $1 each.

The shop will be closed Memorial Day.

We are celebrating 26 years in which our volunteers have served this community by recycling donations and using the proceeds to help more than 3,000 families with emergency needs and providing 72 scholarships to high school graduates and nursing students. Thank you volunteers for the generous hours you have given to help others.

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is located inside the front lobby of Banner Churchill Community Hospital, 801 E. Williams Ave. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The gift shop has a new look with interesting items, full of bright colors, shiny blings and delicious See’s Candies.

The Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit BCCH and other community events.

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed Sunday and Monday), 99 S. Nevada St. Donations are accepted.

The non-profit organization raises funds to benefit BCCH and other health-related events.

Thrifty Finds

Thrifty Finds is a nonprofit store supporting Churchill County youth, 920 W. Williams Ave., Ste. 60A. Enter through Louie’s Dollar Plus

Hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday-Sunday The store is closed Mondays.

Donations are accepted on the east side of the building during regular business hours.

Out of Egypt

Out of Egypt Thrift and Gift, providing for ongoing needs of food and hunger, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fallon Church of the Nazarene, 121 S. Allen Rd.

Donations are welcome during open hours. Please only provide clean and usable items.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada St., serves Friday night dinners open to the public.

On the first Friday each month the Sons of the American Legion has a fish fry. The second Friday is Bubba Burgers and all the fixings. The third Friday dinners have been cancelled until further notice. The fourth and fifth Fridays are steak dinners.

Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Street tacos, $1 each or four for $3, are served on Thursdays. On the fourth Thursday each month prime rib sandwiches and fixings are served.

Open to the public. We ask for a $5 donation.

Breakfast is served the second Sunday each month 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Square dancing

The Oasis Squares, Fallon’s square dance club meets every Friday, 7-9 p.m., Highland Estates, 570 N. Sherman St.

Mainstream and plus tips called by Dennis Mastin of Winnemucca. Experienced dancers are always welcomed. Come dance in a square and make a circle of friends.

Language-learning online is possible with a library card at the library, 553 S. Maine St.

Rocket Languages delivers online language tutorials to your home. Available languages are Spanish, Arabic, German, Chinese, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, American Sign Language, and English for Spanish and Japanese speakers.

CARE

Churchill County Parks and Recreation (CARE) after-school program is available for children ages 6-12. Each day includes homework, snack, fun and games as well as arts and crafts. The children also swim three days a week at the indoor pool.

Costs are $30 per week or $10 a day for drop-ins. Discounts are available for multiple children and monthly reservations.

Domestic Violence Support Group

To listen or share, Domestic Violence Support Group meetings are each Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. Call 775-423-1313 for meeting location.

Violence takes many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. Important steps to help yourself or someone you know in preventing, or stopping violence is recognizing the warning signs and by receiving support.

Free childcare is provided.

Storytime at the library

Churchill County Library Storytime is each Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m., in the library.

In addition to enjoying a story, children can look at books and magazines or work a puzzle.

Fallon Writer’s Group

The Fallon Writer’s Group meets the second and fourth Monday each month. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center, 310 Court St.

This informal group is for anyone who enjoys all genre of writing and an opportunity to share your personal style of writing.

The Lahontan Garden Club meets the third Monday each month January through October at 1 p.m.

An informal motorcyle group meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Sonic, 2070 Reho Highway. This is an opportunity to see old friends and make new ones.

Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 507 Churchill Street, holds Sunday Service at 10 a.m. with a fellowship hour and refreshments following.

Episcopal Church Women meet Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. and Wednesday night services are at 7 p.m.

The Fallon Tea Party meets the first and third Thursday each month at the library annex, 7 p.m., South Maine and Fairview (behind the bookstore).

Dinner — The Fallon Elks Lodge, 93. W. Center St., serves dinner the first and third Friday of each month. The first Friday features a fish fry, and the third Friday night dinner varies.

Breakfasts — Breakfast is served on the last Sunday of the month from 8-10 a.m.

Volunteers needed

There are many adults living in Fallon who would like to learn to speak, read, write and understand English.

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada exists in five counties including Churchill. We need tutors living in Fallon to teach these adults.

We are a volunteer service organization operating on a no-cost-to-student basis, teaching one-on-one. If you are willing to make a difference in your community and help solve the language barrier, please call Donna at 775-246-8765 or 775-888-2021.

We train and provide instructional materials at no charge. Training at your convenience takes one hour. We will match you with an adult near you who is anxious to learn.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office. The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.
