Bill overhauling sex ed curriculum dies in Senate

A bill overhauling Nevada’s sex education curriculum has died in the state Senate.

AB230 was taken off a roster of bills to be voted upon Friday. The bill faced a midnight deadline to survive.

The bill would have set up a state council to determine criteria to be covered by an updated sex education course. The new curriculum would have covered topics such as contraception methods, domestic violence and sexual abuse, communicable diseases and the effects of drugs and alcohol on decision-making.

Democratic Assemblyman David Bobzien of Reno was the prime sponsor of the bill. He says the legislation would have given youth more accurate information.

But Senate Democrats opted to avoid the issue, agreeing not to vote on it.
