County details youth summer camps, activities

The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department has released its summer schedule.

Events include the Sumfun Day Camp, youth volleyball, football and tennis camps, Boots and Britches, Running with the Cows 5K and the Dust Devil Sprint Triathlon.

The Sumfun day camp begins June 10 and runs through Aug. 23. The camp is open to youths 6 to 12 years of age from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Each week includes a theme, snacks, games, activities, crafts, field trips, swimming and more. Pre-registration for each week is required and the cost is $85 per week plus a one-time registration fee of $15.

Other fees include a drop-in rate of $25, and $25 for the field trips to Wild Island. Full summer pre-payment option is available again this year.

The annual youth volleyball camp will be held twice this summer. The first session is June 25-27, while the second is July 30–Aug. 1 at the Gym at Venturacci Park.

Jennifer Buckmaster will instruct as she aims to teach the skills needed to excel in volleyball. The camp is open to children from grades fourth through seventh and the cost is $50 for one session or $80 for both. Each participant will receive a tank top and volleyball.

This year’s football camp will be run by coaches and staff from the Fallon Youth Football League. The camp will run from July 22-26 at Churchill County High School.

The camp will run from 5–7:30 p.m. each night and the cost is $50 per person and includes a T-shirt. The camp is open to youths ages 5-14.

On the court, one week of tennis lessons for beginning and intermediate tennis players (ages 7-18) runs July 15-18.

John Moore will instruct students in game rules, etiquette, serves, forehand, backhand, volleys, lobs and much more. Lessons will take place at the CCHS tennis courts.

Participation is limited and the cost is $45 per person. Semi-private lessons are available with a maximum of four students per group.

Back for another year of fun is the Churchill County Boots and Britches program. The program offers exciting events like barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending and more. Events are open to all ages.

Registration begins at 5 p.m. each night. The dates for the program this year are June 11 and 25, July 9 and 23 and Aug. 13 and 20. A registration fee of $3 per person is required and prices for events vary per age category.

Parks and Recreation brings back the annual Running with the Cows 5K on June 8. This will be a unique run that will include “head starts” and custom finisher medals to every participant who crosses the finish line.

Entry fee for the event is $20 for all participants and a post race ceremony and breakfast available to all competitiors. The race will start and finish in the lot at Oats Park. The race kicks off at 8 a.m. and registration opens at 7 a.m. for day of entrants and for race packet pick-up.

The annual Dust Devil Sprint Triathlon is on Aug. 17 and is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. The local competitive event puts athletes into the Churchill County Indoor Pool for a 525-yard swim; a 14-mile, no hill, paved bike ride in rural Fallon; and a 2.9 mile run around the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Cost is $65 per individual and a team event is included this year for a cost of $120 per team. Age groups range from 16 years and up.
