Elected officials to release schedules

Gov. Brian Sandoval and other top Nevada statewide elected officials will begin releasing their public schedules.

Nevada Press Association Executive Director Barry Smith says the public release of the schedules is “a matter of transparency” and should help Nevadans better understand what their elected officials are doing.

The new practice comes after the Las Vegas Sun asked the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and controller to provide a weekly calendar to the public.

The Sun reports no Nevada office routinely released such information, and the practice exists in many other states. At least a dozen governors in other states display calendars online.

Beginning this week, Sandoval plans to email a weekly schedule to the state’s news media and Secretary of State Ross Miller plans to display his public schedule on his office’s website.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and Treasurer Kate Marshall plan to publicly release their schedules in coming weeks.

Controller Kim Wallin already has published a two-month public schedule on her website, and a staff member said the office will update it as new events are added.
