Obituary: John Brian McSweeney

July 24, 1940 - October 16, 2013

John Brian McSweeney passed away early Wednesday morning in his home. He was born July 24, 1940 in Lynn, Massachusetts to his parents Bill and Florence McSweeney. He was the youngest of three children, a sister Joan DeMarco and brother William McSweeney.

John attended college at Pueblo Jr College in Colorado then transferred to the University of Nevada, Reno. He was a lineman in football and a collegian champion in the 165 lbs weight division in boxing winning the national championships. Upon graduation he worked at the clear creek Job corps, until governor O’Callaghan appointed him head of highway safety. He later became director of aging services for the state of Nevada. His last seventeen years working at the state, he taught at the Juvenile probation office in Carson City.

John was an avid fisherman, boxing referee and judge, and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles 1006. He also collected coins and enjoyed sharing them with his grandson.

He is survived by son, Michael McSweeney of Idaho; son, Matthew, daughter-in-law, Cameron and grandson, Garrett McSweeney, and daughter, Kathleen, son-in-law, Steve, and grand daughter, Kylie Heckman.

The funeral will be 11:30 Wednesday, October 23rd at Fitzhenry’s in Carson City. A celebration of life will be held at the Eagles Hall at a later date.
