The Fallon boys soccer team is playing for its postseason life.
The Greenwave has an uphill battle as the boys take on perennial powers Sparks and Truckee. Fallon played at first-place Sparks (13-1-0, 39 points) on Tuesday and results were not available. The Wave’s regular-season finale is at 4 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Complex against the second-place Wolverines (12-1-1, 37).
Fallon currently sits in fourth place, which is the final playoff position. South Tahoe (11-3-0, 33) is in third. Sparks, Truckee and South Tahoe have all clinch a berth in next week’s Northern Division I-A regional in Fallon.
The Wave, however, must hold off Lowry, Spring Creek and Elko for the final spot. Lowry, Spring Creek and Elko play each other this week, and a sweep or win and a tie for one of those clubs, plus two Fallon losses, would knock Fallon out.
For the Wave, a result against Sparks or Truckee is all but a must.
On the girls side, though, the Lady Wave (10-2-2, 32) has punched their ticket to next week’s regional tournament. Fallon hosted Sparks on Tuesday (results not available) and plays at second-place Truckee (11-2-1, 34) on Thursday.
One win clinched the No. 3 seed for the Lady Wave, while two victories give Fallon the No. 2 seed. First-place South Tahoe (11-1-2, 35) finishes with Sparks (2-12-0, 6) and Dayton (0-14-0, 0).
Elko (9-4-1, 28), meanwhile, is in fourth and holding off Spring Creek (8-6-0, 24). The two clubs play this week and also against sixth-place Lowry (5-9-0, 15). Elko must earn a draw or win to advance to the playoffs. Spring Creek must win both matches.
On the volleyball court, the Lady Wave (6-9 league) has been eliminated from contention. Fallon lost to Dayton, 25-16, 25-14, 25-14. The Lady Wave ended their season on Tuesday against Sparks.
Dayton (15-0), Truckee (13-2) and Elko (9-5) has clinched a playoff berth. Lowry (8-6) qualifies with one win or a South Tahoe loss. South Tahoe (6-8) must win its final two matches and Lowry loses its last two to qualify.
On the track, the cross country teams compete at the Northern Division I-A regional meet on Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The boys run at 10:40 a.m. and the girls at 1:15 p.m.
