Montana artist to give free talk next month

Montana artist Robert Royhl will give a talk on his paintings and prints that are now on view at the Art Center. The show “Odd Encounters: Scenes from the New World,” features a selection of work done by the artist between 1989 and 2014.

To create the lavishly detailed works, the artist spends time — days, weeks, months, sometimes even years — in a particular place and tries to visualize all things that might have passed through the place. The figurative abstract paintings are rich in detail and pulse with energy.

The talk will be from 4-5 p.m. in the E.L Wiegand Gallery at the Art Center on Sept. 6, followed by a reception for the artist from 5-7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. For more information you can call Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.

The talented LA-based band Dustbowl revival will blow into town for a show on Sept. 13. The nine member Roots and Jazz collective merges old-school bluegrass, gospel, pre-WWII blues and New Orleans swing into a string band-brass band mash up.

Their infectious, joyous music is a youthful take on time-honored Americana music traditions. Replete with tuba, washboard, accordion, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet and guitars they joyously pump out twenty-first versions of musical days gone by.

It promises to be a lively show and the artists will also conduct a free and open to the public conversation on their musical and other influences at 3 p.m. on the day of the performance.

Tickets for the evening performance are now on sale — $17 for CAC members, $20 for non-members — and may be purchased at Jeff’s Copy Express, ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440. Doors will open at 7 p.m., there will be a no-host bar and the show will begin at 8 p.m.

The performance of Dustbowl Revival is also part of the city of Fallon’s “Tractors & Truffles,” a locovore farm-to-table food event. Events for the day include a tour of Lattin Farms with lunch prepared on site; a tour and tasting at Churchill Vineyards and Distillery; the conversation with members of Dustbowl Revival; and a gourmet dinner in the park.

Chefs for this year’s event are Steve Hernandez of the Slanted Porch, Ryan Scott of “Top Chef” and “Food Rush” and Mark Davis of the Culinary School at the Art Institute of Chicago.
