Christmas concerts planned in Gardnerville

Consort Canzona, a group of instrumentalists and singers who specialize in early music, will present “Lessons and Carols” in two free concerts in Gardnerville, the first at 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, and another at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1480 Douglas Ave.

The program, originally titled “The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols,” was formatted in 1880 by Edward Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for a Christmas Eve service in Truro, Cornwall, where he was bishop. It was created as a service of Christian worship recounting the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus.

Consort Canzona’s version, directed by Gary Schwartz, presents readings from the Bible and poets such as John Milton and John Donne, separated by vocal and instrumental compositions. Music by William Byrd, Tomas Victoria, and Michael Praetorius is included, and Heinrich Schutz’ “Deutsches Magnificat” follows the reading on the Annunciation.

Carson City musician Sharon Kientz organized Consort Canzona in 2009 for recorders, cello, and harpsichord. Singers were added in 2011. For more information, call 775-883-4154, or go to CCSymphony.com.

Outreach center hosting events

St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Outreach Center, 4280 Highway 50 in Silver Springs, offers free breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the first Wednesday of the month.

The center is hosting a Christmas craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Gingerbread social helps food program in Storey schools

Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City is hosting a gingerbread social and auction from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14 for Food for Thought’s backpack food program in Storey County schools.

The event, whose admission is one canned food item, includes a gingerbread house contest. Entry deadline will be noon on Dec. 11, and entries will be judged at the visitor center at 86 S. C St. in Virginia City.

BLM seeks comment on plans for Carson district

The Bureau of Land Management is asking for comments about its draft resource management plan and environmental impact statement for the Carson City District.

The plan addresses areas of critical environmental concern, lands and realty, utility corridors, wind energy, travel management, recreation, fish and wildlife, minerals, wild and scenic rivers, public health and safety, and visual resource management.

Artist hosting annual open studio Dec. 13-14

Teri Sweeney, a watercolor and oil painter, is hosting her fifth annual open studio, an event offering the artist’s original pieces for sale as well as prints and cards, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 and form noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at 720 Addler Road.

There will be a blind auction, and some paintings will be discounted. New this year, Sweeney will present a preview of two miniatures to be shown in February at the Settlers West Miniature Show, which showcases western artists from around the country, in Tucson, Ariz.

Sweeney teaches weekly art classes in Gardnerville and South Lake Tahoe. Visitors are welcome to tour her classroom and studio spaces at the event.
