Event honors Lyon County women

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley hosted a meet and greet event to celebrate March as Nevada Women’s History Month on Sunday, March 22, when 12 Lyon County women were honored for their contributions to the community.

Honorees included: Judy Harris, Jannette Hoffert, Mabel Masterman, Bonnie Matton, Ruby McFarland, Grace Ricci, Mona Reno, Nancy Sbragia, Ruth Small, Laura Tennant, Lee Vecchiarelli and Kay Winters, who were included in “Nevada Women’s Legacy: 150 Years of Excellence,” a book highlighting women’s role in shaping Nevada.

Minden library holding story session, VHS sale

The Douglas County Public Library is hosting a story session with music and crafts for all ages at 10 a.m. March 30 at Topaz Ranch Estates Community Center, 3939 Carter Way.

The library is retiring its collection of VHS tapes, which will be on sale for 25 cents each from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 2 at the Minden branch, 1625 Library Lane.

Choral group to begin rehearsing Tuesday

The Carson City Symphony Chorus is calling singers to rehearse from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Choral Room of Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road, for a spring celebration concert with the Carson City Symphony on April 26 at the Community Center.

The concert will feature music by Mozart, Brahms, and Grieg, with soloists Sally Turk, flute, and Michael Langham, harp.

The Carson City Symphony Chorus will sing Mozart’s “Te Deum” with the orchestra.

The Symphony Chorus, conducted by Michael Langham, is an extension of the Carson Chamber Singers.

It provides opportunities for amateur and volunteer professional vocalists, including high school and church choir members.

The group will feature at the Symphony’s Pops Party concert on June 14 at the Governor’s Mansion, and also at an Independence Day concert on July 4 at Mormon Station Park in Genoa.

Symphony group’s performance to mark Christ’s Passion

TOCCATA — Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform its annual presentation of J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, the Passion according to St. Matthew, in three concerts, the first of which will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 501 California Ave. in Reno.

The program, in English, will feature selections from Part Two of the Passion. It will be repeated at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Ave. in South Lake Tahoe, and at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, April 3, at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 341 Village Blvd. in Incline Village.

General admission to all concerts is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $5 for students ages 19 to 23 with identification. Preferred seating is $35 and $15 for youth and students. Youth under 19 are admitted free in non-reserved seating.

Author hosting book signing April 4

Laura Lea White, the author of “Generational Gifts: The Legacy of Evelyn Marie,” a biography of White’s grandmother, who wrote more than 200 poems, will host a book signing event during the next Carson City Wine Walk from 1 to 5 p.m. April 4 at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St.

White’s book follows the life of her grandmother through the author’s own memories and the subject’s own poetry, which focused on the struggles faced while surviving the Great Depression.

White is also the author of “A Golden Circle of Life: A Poem, The Dream,” published in 2009.

Benefit dinner for Carson Tahoe SPCA planned

Vegetarian pasta sauces created by Chef Charlie Abowd of Adele’s will be featured at Carson Tahoe SPCA’s Spay-ghetti & No Balls benefit dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 11 at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St.

The event includes a beer and wine bar, dessert and a silent auction and raffle. Jeffery Pace, owner of Artsy Fartsy, will emcee.

Open Space meeting April 20 is canceled

The Open Space Advisory Committee’s meeting scheduled at 6 p.m. April 20 in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center has been canceled.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 27 at the same place.

Although Nevada’s year-long Sesquicentennial celebration is over, limited-edition license plates commemorating the 150th anniversary of Nevada’s statehood are available through 2016.

Nonprofit calling local families to host foreign students

The nonprofit ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is looking for local families to host students age 15-18 from a variety of countries, including Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy and Japan.

ASSE students are hoping to experience American culture and practice their English language skills while also sharing their own culture and language with their host families.

Host families welcome students into their family, not as guests, but as family members. The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

NV Energy customer service available 24/7

NV Energy is offering a statewide call center telephone system that provides interactive voice response solutions, so customers can reach a live representative 24 hours a day.

Customers can order their power turned on at a new location; stop service at an old address; make a payment; get an account balance or report an outage, no matter the time the call is placed.

The system, which operates in English and Spanish, offers the option of making a one-time payment over the phone using a bank account at no charge. It uses speech recognition technology and takes outage calls in English or Spanish, a feature not available previously.

During the past year, contact center employees handled more than 4.3 million customer contacts over the phone, such as bill payments and service turn-ons and turn-offs. On a daily basis, about 30 percent of the calls to NV Energy utilize the company’s self-service option, according to Michelle Follette, vice president of Customer Service for NV Energy.
