After going undefeated and winning the state championship, Fallon’s under-10 all-star baseball team will forgo the regional tournament later this month in Utah because of schedule conflicts.
Nevertheless, Fallon displayed success in all phases of the game in last week’s Cal Ripken state tournament held at Silver State in north Reno. Fallon won all four pool games to earn the No. 1 seed for the single-elimination tournament and proceeded to play its best game against Silver State in three tries.
“They played as a team,” Fallon coach Alex Alger said about the tournament. “The main difference (in the third game) was our pitchers were more accurate and holding the runs (down).”
Fallon used a base-loaded clearing double to break the championship game open against Silver State and went on to win 8-1 on Sunday.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Gabe Oldfield smacked a three-run double to deep left field with none out to help pad Fallon’s lead. Lucas Prinz picked up the victory on the mound and Reese Kincaid closed.
In round robin play, Fallon opened with a 6-3 win over the host on Thursday and then followed with a 12-8 win on Saturday. Kincaid started the first game against Silver State while Toby Anderson and Oldfield pitched in relief. Tyler Austin, Ian Baldwin and Damein Town pitched in the second game.
Alger said Prinz was able to locate the strike zone better compared to the previous two wins against Silver State, helping Fallon win the state title. Kincaid and Austin fared well starting against the host and benefited from Fallon’s potent offense.
Fallon also cruised past Sun Valley, 16-0, on Friday and 25-1 on Saturday to complete the round robin slate. Prinz and Town combined to pitch in the first game while Oldfield and Rodney Alger pitched in the second.w
