Western Nevada sweeps CSN

HENDERSON — Christian Stolo scattered five hits and Rayne Raven drove in two third-inning runs to give Western Nevada College a 3-1 win over College of Southern Nevada Thursday afternoon in the first game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

WNC made it a sweep with a 6-3 win in the nine-inning nightcap.

Stolo struck out four and hit a batter.

WNC took a 1-0 lead in the second when Joey Crunkilton walked and was forced at second by Conor Harber. Sam Hall followed with a run-scoring double.

The Wildcats extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on Raven’s two-run double. Crunkilton and Harber were retired to keep the damage minimal. CSN scored on a two-out wild pitch by Stolo to mak it 3-1.

Neither team scored over the final four innings.

In the second game, Western took a quick 3-0 lead thanks to a first-inning error by losing pitcher D.J. Myers and Crunkilton’s infield out. An errorby second baseman Tyler Brown scored Connor Klein, who had doubled.

CSN tied it with two in the third and one in the fifth. Homers by James Young in the third and Gerald Robbins in the fifth were the key blows.

The Wildcats scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to put the game away. Wild pitchs scored the first two runs and Jake Bennett’s single accounted for the final tally. Bennett was the only WNC player with two hits.

Carson 10, North Valleys 9

RENO — After getting 1-hit by Bailey Glover on Tuesday, the Senators bounced back with a vengeance en route to their first win of the season.

Carson, 1-5-1 overall and 1-1 in league, plays three times today in the Redding Tournament.

“The girls hit the ball well,” CHS coach Shelby Tuttle said. “I’m not sure how many hits we got, but we hit well. We hunkered down in practice.”

Carson had eight hits, two each by Kandis Tuttle and Becka Breuer. Jen Purcell, Aubrey Northrup, Malia Tiffer and Maddy VonDuering added one each. Purcell had three RBI and Breuer added two.

Carson had two in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead.

A passed ball and a Breuer single highlighted the first. Purcell’s sacrifice fly accounted for one of the two runs in the third. Errors led to the two runs in the fifth. NV cut the lead to 6-5 with five in the fifth, but Carson scored four in the top of the sixth on a two-run hit by Purcell and a run-scoring hit by Breuer.

North Valleys scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-9.
