Former longtime University of Nevada head baseball coach Gary Powers will be honored with the retirement of his number 17 on May 9 prior to the Wolf Pack’s 6 p.m. game with New Mexico at Peccole Park.
Powers retired after the 2013 season with 937 wins in 31 seasons leading the Pack baseball program.
A special online-only ticket promotion for the night is 17 tickets for $17. Fans must purchase the tickets by 4 p.m. on May 8 at NevadaWolfPack.com and use the promotion code POWERS17.
The first 300 fans attending the game will receive a commemorative Gary Powers trading card in honor of retiring the number 17. A meet-and-greet to congratulate coach Powers starts at 5 p.m. at Peccole Park.
Powers pitched for the Wolf Pack and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Nevada. In 1983, he was named the head coach at his alma mater and coached more years at Nevada than any other coach in school history.
Four times he was named conference Coach of the Year and led the Pack to four NCAA tournament appearances. The Pack won three conference titles and two division titles under his direction.
Powers produced 17 All-Americans, 141 all-conference selections, four conference Players of the Year, three conference Pitchers of the Year and three conference Freshman of the Year. More than 75 of his players were drafted and more than 90 played professional baseball.
His 1992 squad won a school record 43 games. In 14 seasons the Pack won 30 or more games, six times the team won 35 or more games and twice posted 40 plus win seasons.
