WNC men earn another split

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Western Nevada College closed out its Scenic West Athletic Conference season with another doubleheader split against College of Southern Idaho on Saturday.

CSI won the opener, 5-0, and the Wildcats bounced back with a 5-2 win in the second game thanks to the pitching of Max Karnos and the hitting of Jake Bennett.

In the opener, CSI scored three in the second off starter Kevin Pruneau, who allowed four runs, three earned, and just two hits. He was replaced by Connor Zwetsch after allowing a run in the third. The key blow in the second was a two-run homer by Cody Schmidt. A wild pitch on a third strike and a passed ball accounted for the two runs in the third.

The Wildcats managed just five hits off ex-Reno star Grant Kukuk, one each by Christian Stolo, Connor Klein, Conor Harber, Austin Andrews and Tony Roque.

In the second game, WNC scored four times in the fifth to break a scoreless tie. Alex Fife had a run-scoring double, Bennett drove in two runs and a wild pitch and error led to the final run of the inning. Karnos worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. He fanned five and walked three. Jeremy Alderman picked up the save.

CSN sweeps Wildcats

Heather Septon hit two home runs in her final regular-season game, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Western Nevada College Wildcats to a win on Saturday, as the Western Nevada College Wildcats fell to College of Southern Nevada 16-12 at Edmonds in the second game of Saturday’s Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Septon’s big day included two other hits. The seven RBI was a career best. CSN’s Nicole Lesniak got the win in relief for College of Southern Nevada. She pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs.

College of Southern Nevada pounded the Western Nevada College Wildcats pitching, as seven hitters combined for 18 hits, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored. The Coyotes hit eight homers.

Home runs for College of Southern Nevada came from Vanessa Sanders homered in the third inning, Aimee Aipa homered in the third and fifth innings, Rhiana Balaun homered in the fifth inning, Tiani Hensley homered in the first and fifth innings, Ariel Frantz homered in the fifth inning, and Mikela Manewa homered in the sixth inning. 2B: Sarina Creswell

In the opener, College of Southern Nevada snapped a 6-all tie with four seventh-inning runs for the win.

Andi Lee racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Western Nevada College Wildcats. She homered in the first inning and singled in the fifth inning.

Lesniak got the win for College of Southern Nevada. She tossed 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball. She struck out two, walked none and gave up two hits.

Home runs for College of Southern Nevada came when Hensley homered in the third inning, Balaun homered in the fifth inning, Manewa homered in the sixth inning, and Frantz homered in the seventh inning. The group combined for six hits and seven RBI.

WNC had fielding issues, as only half of the CSN runs were earned.
