140 years ago

Farmer Treadway is once more the responsible head of our county arrangements for the care and maintenance of the helpless poor. This is a renewal of a formerly existing arrangement. The farmer in an earlier day assumed our eleemosynary responsibilities and ministered to the impoverished, the disabled and the bedridden.

130 years ago

Memorial Day is celebrated in Carson City with a procession a mile long with the presentations at the Opera House. The procession was led by the Grand Marshal and his aids followed by the band, the Carson Guard, Custer Post No. 5 of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic), Mexican War Veterans, Carriages carrying the orator, chaplain, poet and quartette followed last by the school children.

100 years ago

Memorial Day was properly observed by the Carson Members of the G.A.R. The occasion did not have as many veterans as 40 years ago, but the day was not lost in its sacredness to the minds of the later generations.

70 years ago

Jack Lee Scott, USNR of Carson City has been flying with the squadron known as Rankin’s Night Raiders, the famous Black Cat aviation unit operating in the South Pacific. Scott is the veteran of more than 27 missions over enemy territory.

50 years ago

The Dayton eighth grade class will graduate from a building that is now 100 years old. But the seven students will not graduate in the building; the ceremonies are to be held in the high school across the street. Graduates are Nancy Sbragia, Micheal Ashworth, Carolyn Minor, William Loranger, Jacqueline Strong, Fretchies Frank and Eric King. Lt. Gov. Paul Laxalt will give the commencement speech.

30 years ago

Gov. Richard Bryan has appointed Thomas Stephens to the Nevada Public Service Commission. Chairman Scott Cragie is also a Bryan appointee.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
