Danell Fanning, a veteran from Carson City, won first place at the National Veterans Creative Art Festival in Milwaukee, Wis., with her knitted shawl entry titled The Carson Shawl, which was patterned by artist Romie Hill.

The festival features 54 categories of artwork, including wood carving, painting, sculpture, photography and metal work, as well as a craft kit category for beginners. The work is judged on a local level, and pieces are chosen for regional and national competitions.

Fanning also won at last year’s show in Reno with her beaded piece titled “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”
