Alf Torsten Rylander of Fallon, NV. passed away November 9, 2014. son of Swedish immigrants, he was born in the Norwegian Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Raised on Long Island, he graduated with a R.A. from Hofstra University and later received his M.ED from the University of Vermont. He spent 4 years in the Navy as a pilot, flying AD6’s with Squadron VA 195, eventually being stationed in Fallon, NV. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Alf moved to Vermont where he taught junior high school science, became an elementary school guidance counselor, and a Principal at 2 elementary schools. In 1968, he had the honor of becoming the first president of the board of directors for the newly formed Addison County Home Health Agency. he moved to Fallon, NV in 1985 where he taught 5th grade for 12 years before retiring. Alf loved to fish and hike and passed these passions onto his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being a member of the Lakes Crossing Muzzleloaders and participating in rendezvous. Alf’s family wishes the members to toast him at their next gathering. Alf is survived by his wife, Judith, son, Alf III (Michelle), daughters, Dr. Rachele Baker; Karen (Pete) Staniels and Susan (Robert) Pyles, eight grandchildren, Lareina Baker; Lesley Hendry; Nick Hendry; Mitchell Rylander; Alf Rylander IV; Allison Rylander; Robert Pyles; and Julia Pyles. He was so pleased when his great-granddaughter Lily Marie Hendry arrived. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Vermont.
