Fallon heads its way past Fernley

It was not much of a contest, but the Fallon girls soccer team will take the win.

The Lady Wave pounded Fernley, 9-0, on Wednesday at the Edward Arciniega Complex to snap a two-game losing skid.

Fallon had lost four of its last five matches putting the club on the outside of the Northern Division I-A playoff chase. The Lady Wave hit the pitch for a home match at 10 a.m. against Dayton on Saturday.

“Anytime you win, no matter who play, is good for the kids because they want to work,” Fallon coach Kelly Spicer said. “They worked their hindeparts off this week.”

Jordin Warner led the Lady Wave with a hat-trick as she tallied all three goals via the header. Her first goal came early in the match, then added her second after Heather Hancock sent a cross into the box and Warner came up with a beautiful slicing flick that tucked inside the left post of the goal in the 37th minute giving Fallon a 4-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Warner put home another goal, although she did not hit the ball with much force, it trickled past the Fernley goalkeeper.

“She played great today,” Spicer said. “I moved her up to forward and she earned it.”

Warners heads-up play is the result of countless hours of practice by Spicer and his staff. Many times the girls are reluctant to put their head on the ball, but Warner among others started to show how the aerial game can alter a match.

“It’s nice to see stuff you work on work in the game,” Spicer said. “It’s nice to see some of the girls who don’t get to contribute who contributed.

Joining Warner in the barrage of goals were Alexis Duenas (two goals), Britney Wallace, Rebecca Mills, Melinda Fagundes and Hancock. Megan Warner added three assist and Brianna Vezina chipped in with one.

“That’s the cool part of coaching is you get to see kids score who normally don’t score a lot,” Spicer said. “It makes it fun.”

Currently, the Lady Wave sit two points in front of Lowry for fifth place and are chasing Truckee, Elko, Spring Creek and South Tahoe for one of the four playoff berths.

After hosting lowly Dayton (0-6), Fallon takes on two of the leagues powers next week. Defending state champ South Tahoe (5-0-1) rolls into town followed by a trip to Truckee (3-0-2).

The Lady Wave were stung by South Tahoe, 4-0, in the first meeting, as a second-half letdown saw the Vikings tally four goals. South Tahoe, though, is considered one of the best teams in the state in any division, so Fallon must bring its best effort.

As for Truckee, the Lady Wave has already lost twice to the Wolverines, being outscored 10-0. Securing a positive result is not a must, but Fallon at least a tie would provide some life.

“We have nine games left and plenty of time,” Spicer said. “Our goal is to work to get better for the top games.”
