100 Years Ago

The Equal Franchise: Why Women Should Vote …because it is right and fair that those who must obey the laws have a voice in making them…those who must pay taxes should have a vote as to the size of the tax and the way it shall be spent. After more than half a century of agitation by women for reform only 14 out of 46 states now give equal guardianship to mothers.

W.W. Appenheimer, a practical cigar maker, is now engaged in making cigars at his place over the Gray, Reid and Co. store. Thursday, Mr. Oppenheimer received a shipment of a quarter ton of tobacco from the east and has commenced the manufacture of cigars on a large scale. If half the cigars that go up in smoke in Fallon were manufactured here, it would form quite an important industry.

75 Years Ago

Carson City, smallest state capitol in the union, is celebrating the anniversary of statehood for Nevada, the Diamond Jubilee. Staging of this celebration is no mean task. Many features are called for including construction of a “desert bowl”, a huge outdoor pavilion carved out of the hillsides surrounding the city, in which visitors can witness the pageant telling Nevada’s story of statehood. Practically every community in the state will be represented and Churchill County is no exception.

Practically every section of Nevada where there is anything to mine is experiencing a mining revival. In all of this Churchill County is not being passed by, notably east of Fallon where the Dan Tucker, owned by Summit King Mines, Ltd., started building a 70 ton mill this week.

50 Years Ago

Celebrities: Pat Boden and Ruth Colwell have something to be proud of. Pat bowled a 642 series, highest score ever bowled by a woman in Fallon, with a high game of 259 for Eileen’s team in the Desert League. Ruth picked up an almost impossible split of 4-7-6-10 bowling for the Valley Distributors team.

Hats, hats, and more hats! Two lovely hats were modeled by Dora Witt, County Librarian and Denise Williams, assistant Librarian at the “Friends Of The Library Hat Sale”… The grand prize in the “Make It Yourself With Wool” contest is a 14-day holiday in Paris, London, Rome and Nice via Pan Am Jet. The contest is sponsored by the Auxiliary to the National Wool Growers Association, the American Wool Growers Association and in Nevada by the Nevada Wool Growers A Auxiliary.
