Thirteen boys and girls undertook to grow a pig for the state fair at a reasonable profit. Six of them found the task too great, but the other seven came with their pigs and the documents showing just what and how much each of the little grunters had eaten and the amount of pork that had stuck to their ribs, When the pigs were judged and the notebooks scored it was found that the boys had been outclassed by a 12-year-old schoolgirl, Anna York, who is now the champion pig grower.

75 Years Ago

All drillings for test borings on the $5,100,000 underground fuel storage project for the United States navy on Oahu, of the Hawaiian Islands, is under superintendence of J. M. Heizer, formerly of Fallon, and now engineer for sugar companies. Heizer’s assignment is to locate forty tunnels, each forty feet wide x high, extending back into the mountains. When finished, the plant will store eight million barrels of fuel oil protected from airplane bombs and shell fire. The former Fallon man is one of the geological experts contacted to decide on the location of the fuel storage.

Voice records by phonograph carrying Daniel Evan’s greetings from Nevada to New South Wales were to have been played at Eisteddfod, the annual musical, arts and cultural festival which has been celebrated for more than 100 years. But the festival was not held this year according to Welch miss Roberta Brown, owing to many Nazi bombs dropping around Wales and the British Isles. The Eisteddfod could not be the care-free affair it had been in times past. She added that the people of her country are cheerful and confident of final victory.

A new warehouse is under construction at the Nevada Scheelite Division of Kennemetal Inc. on North Taylor Street which will be used for production storage and will release more space for manufacturing in the main plant building…U.S. Patent No. 3,208, 678 providing for a radical change in the design of roll crushing machinery used to process minerals bearing ores, has been issued to two Kennecott Copper Corporation engineers, Hans H. Pick and Norman Stanley, with rights assigned to the company…Many Silver Springs residents were happy to hear the coming of a “Dial” Telephone setup for the community, scheduled for installation next year…In explaining the Churchill County Master Plan to members of the Economic Development Committee, Raymond Smith, planning consultant, emphasized the necessity of preserving the agricultural integrity of the valley, while providing for the growth and development of the total community.
