100 Years Ago

A committee for the 4th of July celebration at Carson City wants Fallon to send her prettiest girl, dressed in a manner typifying the resources of this county, to be a feature in the parade. The committee has asked County Clerk Wilson to make the selection. Can he do it? It is some job alright. United States Reclamation Service gets control of Tahoe…after many years the lake waters are available for irrigation purposes. We now have both Lahontan Reservoir and Tahoe to draw upon and thousands of acres of land can be reclaimed. After many years of negotiations and law-suits since the Truckee-Carson project was commenced the government has at last secured possession of the outlet and controlling works of Lake Tahoe. 75 Years Ago

Should there ever be a period as long as three days when the Fallon district power lines are dead, the Churchill county telephone system would continue to function. These emergencies have now been overcome by installation of a new set of storage batteries which J.P. Crawley of San Francisco sent here on recommendation of the Kellogg Switchboard Company.

Promise is seen in a new type of alfalfa being tried here…the Ladak variety on the Jim Johnson farm appears to resist aphis and wilt. It was planted here first on the experimental farm in August, 1938 on some of the poorest land in the district. The Ladak last year, despite the late planting the year before, measured four tons to the acre, as compared with the Newlands project two and three quarter tons. 50 Years Ago

Powder Puff Derby winners entered the fly-in fun race to Fallon. With entries closed in the San Diego to Fallon fun race, 37 competitors are expected to arrive in Fallon Saturday beginning at 11a.m. The race is open to women pilots. The race is sponsored by the Ninety-Nines, women’s flyers’ group, and Gustavson’s Flying Service of Fallon…Churchill County Kitchen Kittens and This and Thater’s Home Improvement 4H Clubs will be guests on Mrs. Betty Stoddard’s “Be My Guest” program on KOLO-TV, channel 8, on Friday.

The first, the only sonic-boom creating flights in the Joint Task Force Two test series currently being conducted east of Tonopah are scheduled to start June 16. Traffic on Highway U.S. 6 between Tonopah and Ely will be halted for each of the supersonic flights. Since there is no audible warning of an aircraft approaching at supersonic speed, this precaution is intended to avoid startling motorists traveling in the area.
