David Carter
Residence: Carson City
Occupation: Former executive director of fiscal services, Capistrano Unified School District, semi-retired
Age: 58
Record of service: 33 years of accounting experience, including 25 years with California School Districts, includes seven years as Director of Fiscal Services at Mono County Office of Education (Bridgeport, Calif.).
Education: National University, Los Angeles, Calif.; Master in Business Administration, emphasis in Financial Management, 1986; Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, Bachelor of Science, major in Accounting, minor in Business Administration 1980.
Platform: Opposed to Margin Tax Initiative (Question 3). There is no guarantee that the funds given to the Distributive Student Account through this law, if passed, would not be pulled from existing funds in the DSA. It also hurts local and statewide business. Small businesses will be hurt, but Tesla gets exemptions? Opposed to Common Core. Many reasons, including the NEW Math protocol and the student/parent data collection required. California and New York allow parents/students to opt out — why not Nevada?

Stacie Wilke
Residence: Carson City
Record of service: Born and raised in Carson City, graduated CHS in 1983. I have been actively involved in the Carson City schools and the community since 1999. This includes leadership role in PTA’s, Pop Warner, Northern Nevada Children’s Museum, Parks and Recreation commission and Democratic Women’s Club. I was elected to my first term for District 3 in 1999, then appointed again in 2009 and elected in 2010.
Platform: These are exciting and challenging times in our school district. We are in our second year of Race to the Top, the first year of our 1:1 Mobile rollout and first year of all day kindergarten. Our challenge now is providing the upper level of education without having any excess ending fund balance to draw from. This the biggest issue facing the school board in the next fiscal year along with the challenges of a new legislative session. This is why we must stay true to “Empower Carson City 2017.” Empower 2017 is the strategic plan that the School Board adopted in 2012 after tremendous collaboration by students, teachers, parents, community members and the business community for over a year. (Empower Carson City 2017/ strategic plan can be found at www.carsoncityschools.com). As a Board, we are committed to these stakeholders to do the following five goals in five years: 1) Community in Full Partnership, 2) Engage Parents and Guardians, 3) Healthy Generations of Carson Students, 4) Curriculum that Matters and 5) Exceptional Administrators, Teachers and Staff. These goals are then broken down into objectives. My goal if re-elected is make sure “Empower 2017” is a reality by 2017.
