Lady Wave clinches playoff bid

With an emphatic sweep, the Fallon softball team is once again headed to the postseason.

The Lady Wave drilled Dayton, 18-2, 20-0 and 19-0, last weekend to clinch their fifth consecutive trip to the Northern Division I-A postseason.

In addition, rival Fernley also earned its fifth straight playoff bid with a sweep over Elko, while Lowry also clinched its spot with a sweep over Truckee.

Fallon and Fernley, meanwhile, renewed its rivalry with the rubber match on Tuesday at the Edward Arciniega Complex, although results were not available at press time.

As for the weekend, Fallon was a machine on offense, but Dayton managed to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on Friday.

Fallon tied the game in the bottom half of the frame, then exploded for 11 runs in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth to seal the win.

The Lady Wave mashed out 20 hits led by Ali Tedford’s 4-for-5 performance. She tallied four RBIs and three runs, while Megan McCormick added a pair doubles and two RBIs.

Hannah Frank, Ashley Alvarez and Aleica Baze each added a pair of RBIs. Baze earned the win in the circle as she went five innings with four strikeouts and allowed one unearned run on two hits.

In Saturday’s action, Tedford opened the day with a 5-for-5 effort scoring two runs, driving in two and adding a trio of doubles.

Paige Thorn, Caitlyn Welch and Kayla Buckmaster each went 4-for-4. Welch had four RBIs, Thorn two and Buckmaster added three doubles and drove in two.

For the game, Fallon tallied 11 doubles and 10 stolen bases, while Buckmaster threw a complete-game (five innings) one hitter and struck out seven.

In the finale, Thorn, Alvarez and Kalyn Huckaby each went 4-for-4, while Thron and Alvarez each chipped in with three RBIs.

Miranda Ford earned the win as she went five innings allowing just three hits and struck out six.
