Tracksters solid at Del Oro Invite

It was another solid effort in preparation for the stretch run.

The Fallon track teams once again set numerous season and personal best times at the Del Oro Invitational on Friday in California.

The Fallon boys tied for 12th in the varsity division with 14 points, while the Fallon girls frosh/soph squad took 11th with 18.

Charles Fulks led the way with a third-place finish in the 400 meters at 51.97 seconds, while Cameron Kissick took seventh, coming in at 52.78.

“We had a great day,” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said. “Charles … just huge and he’s really coming on at the right time of the season.”

For Fulks, it was a personal-best time as he sliced .5 seconds off his previous best time two weeks ago at the Thunder Invitational in Rocklin, Calif.

Tristen Thomson also had his best run of the season nearly eclipsing the 2-minute mark in the 800. The Fallon junior finished seventh with a time of 2:00.79.

Jake Ernst had Fallon’s best finish with a second-place effort in the triple jump landing at 42-3, his best leap of the year by more than 2 feet.

“He is kind of hitting his stride,” Heck said.

In the relays, the 4x400 squad of Kissick, Thomson, Fulks and Jordan Schultz came in seventh at 3:37.79, while the 4x100 team of Nathan Heck, Jake Ernst, Cole Service and Fulks took eighth at 45.03.

As for the Lady Wave, freshman Chloe Overlie had her best run of the season in the 800 as she came in at 2:32.26 to place sixth. She also added a ninth-place finish in the 1-mile with a mark of 5:55.25.

LeAnn Stands matched Overlie’s second-place finish with one of her own in the shot put and discus. Stands, a sophomore, hit 32-11.5 in the shot put and followed with a mark of 96-1 in the discus, both season best distances.

“She’s coming on ... and getting better at the right time,” girls coach Paul Orong said. “Chloe, I think is starting to understand racing instead of running. I think she’s realizing she can run with the faster girls.”

On Saturday, Nathan Heck and T.J. Mauga competed in the 57th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Heck missed all three attempts in the pole vault, while Mauga landed one of three throws in the discus.

Heck’s first attempt at 14 feet cleared, but his arm nicked the bar on the way down. His final two attempts also missed as Heck did not record a height in the invitational division.

In the seeded flight of the discus, Mauga threw 134-1 and placed 14th out of 16 throwers.

He missed the sector on his first two attempts but landed his third.

“He looked great in warm-ups,” Steve Heck said of Nathan Heck. “He was very disappointed. We know he’s got a big jump in him. He (Mauga) had two really nice throws, but they were just barely outside the sector. He was much more composed and confident this time. That’s why you go is to see what the big-time is like.”

Mt. SAC notes: Bishop Gorman junior Vashti Cunningham broke the national prep record in the high jump with a leap of 6-4.25.

McQueen’s Kai Benedict won the 1,600 with a time of 4:09.16 to nip Centennial’s (Las Vegas) Dajour Braxton by .02 seconds.
