100 Years Ago

The Barnes big three-ring wild animal circus offers one of the best opportunities for the study of natural history obtainable. After each afternoon’s performances the meat-eating animals are given their daily rations. During this period one can see the lions, tigers, leopards, pumas, jaguars and other members of the giant cat tribe in uproarious activity. To witness their feeding gives one a better idea of what it means to be a trainer of jungle-bred beasts.

75 Years Ago

Adoption of “Our State Nevada” as a Nevada history textbook for classroom work of seventh and eighth grade pupils of Nevada schools was announced in Carson City Monday by the state textbook commissioner. Mrs. H. W. Sawyer of Fallon, secretary of the county board of education and holder of a master’s degree in history is a co-author of the book with Dr. Effie Mona Mack of Reno. Mrs. Sawyer spent several years of study and research and traveled for many months, altogether, to various sections of the state reviewing material for the text.

Latest addition to tourist courts: The most recent addition to accommodations provided at Fallon for motor tourists is called Lane’s Motelin, and is located on U.S. 50 just west of the Fallon city limits. Modern facilities are available at this court, built by George M. Smitten and operated under lease from him by Mrs. Osia Lane.

50 Years Ago

Some 94 head of 4-H and FFA livestock show animals went across the block at Gallagher’s Sale Yard Friday evening. They were sold for a total of $8,170.88 to over 50 buyers…Mayor Jack Tedford and Senator Carl Dodge were on hand to welcome bowlers to the Annual Nevada State Men’s Bowling Tournament at Oasis Lanes in Fallon… From the single stone building erected in 1881, the Nevada State Hospital now has a complex of 18 buildings and is probably the only state agency that operates on an around the clock basis, seven days a week.

Crazy hats were the theme of the Soda lake Good Will Club, held at the home of Mrs. Beverly House. Prizes were awarded to Marge Silva, for funniest hat; Vida Cavitt, the prettiest hat and Irene Soule for the most original hat.
