The Nevada Department of Transportation has begun work applying a top sealant to U.S. 395 through the Carson Valley.

A spokesman said there will be overnight lane closures but that the roadway will remain open throughout the project. Work will take place between 6 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. each night to apply what engineers describe as a flush seal — a top layer of oil to rejuvenate the asphalt and prevent deterioration that would require much more extensive and expensive repairs.

The new seal will be applied from the U.S. 50 junction at the south end of Carson City to Mono Avenue in Gardnerville.

Nighttime lane closures will occur through Thursday night this week as well as on Monday, Aug. 17.
