The Department of Motor Vehicles is upgrading the security on temporary vehicle tags to make them less vulnerable to fraud.

Temporary tags are issued when a new or used vehicle is purchased from a dealer until the owner can officially register and license the vehicle.

DMV Director Troy Dillard said the new tags are web-based and computer generated. He said they can be quickly verified as genuine by law enforcement and include security features making the tags harder to counterfeit.

“The old tags were vulnerable to counterfeiting and tampering and could not be verified by law enforcement,” Dillard said.
