VISALIA, Calif. — Led by champions Nolan Shine and Brady Rivera, Carson High finished in third place at the annual Redwood Invitational at Redwood High School.

Shine (160) and Rivera (220) each went 4-0 en route to individual titles.

“Shine dominated his guy in the finals,” CHS coach Paul Carter said. “Brady beat a real tough kid from Clovis in the finals (4-2). He wrestled a darn good match.”

Brandon Basa (113) took second, losing 12-4 in the finals. He went 3-1 on the weekend. Connor Sievers lost in overtime in the semifinals, but then bounced back to win two straight and take third at 182. He went 3-1 on the weekend. Heavyweight Sheldon Miller did the same thing. He lost in the semis and bounced back to win his next two for a third-place finish.

The only other placer for Carson was Spencer Rogers, who took sixth at 126. He ended up 2-3, losing two of his matches in controversial fashion.

According to Carter, Rogers had a takedown with five seconds left in his semifinal match. The referee ruled it was out of bounds. Carter argued the call to no avail.

“I had other coaches tell me my guy should have won the match,” Carter said.

In his last match, which went overtime, Rogers’ opponent was awarded a takedown even though he hadn’t established an advantage.

Terin Keller (106), Casey Stevens (120), Nathan Mersino (132) and Jarod Butler (152) all failed to place. All four lost their opening consolation matches. Butler finished 2-2.

“I thought we wrestled pretty good,” Carter said.
