Upsets the name of the game at last weekend’s Top Gun Raceway

The leaderboard in many of the racing divisions at Top Gun Raceway tightened some what after Saturday’s full-day of racing.

Steve Melson of Reno and Fallon’s Tami Phillips breezed through the brackets to meet head-to-head in Sportsman. Phillips had defeated Walt Stacey in round 3 to advance to the championship race.

Melson, though, guided his Nissan Titan to victory to nip Phillips in her 1973 Dodge Duster.

Going into Saturday, Phillips held a 469-439-point lead over Stacey.

Sixteen drivers began their day facing each other in round 1 in Pro, but by the time the finals occurred, Kevin Morris of Sparks defeated Jim Grace of Fallon.

Grace had 450 points going into the weekend to lead the division.

A battle between veteran Lonnie Grace and Jennifer Carey came down to the finals after each driver knocked off their opponents in Super Pro’s first three rounds.

Carey powered her dragster down the quarter-mile straight track to take the win.

The Super Pro racing was also a homecoming for Gabrielle (Silva) Hardee. Grace defeated Hardee in the third round to eliminate the former Fallon racer. Hardee is on leave with the U.S. Air Force, and before she graduated from Churchill County High School, Hardee was involved with Top Gun racing, starting first with the Junior Dragsters.

Nicholas Morris won Junior Dragsters, defeating Robin Enget.

In the General Motors race, which featured racers and their GM vehicles, Kelly Enget of Winnemucca won the championship over Tom Gorely. Nine drivers competed in the special competition.
