Man shot by Douglas deputies identified

A Gardnerville Ranchos man was killed in a confrontation with Douglas County deputies Thursday at his Monument Peak Drive home.

Mark Perkins, 48, was identified as the man shot by deputies, after an attempt to serve an arrest warrant.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Perkins was reportedly in possession of multiple weapons and had threatened his wife, and allegedly told her he was going to shoot a police officer and a neighbor.

Undersheriff Paul Howell said the sheriff’s office obtained an arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and a search warrant for his home at 930 Monument Peak.

Because of the circumstances surrounding the case, Howell said that the county’s Special Weapons and Tactics and Crisis Negotiation teams were activated.

Both teams staged at the Gardnerville Ranchos Fire Department on Mitch Drive before heading to the Monument Peak address a block away at about 5:30 p.m.

“As members of the SWAT team were deploying to secure the suspect residence and evacuate surrounding homes, Perkins came out of his home armed and confronted the deputies,” Howell said. “At some point during the confrontation Perkins pointed two weapons at multiple officers. The officers fired their weapons and Perkins was struck by the deputies’ gunfire and died at the scene.”

Neighbors reported hearing a popping noise, followed by ambulance sirens.

Howell said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conduct the criminal investigation of the officer involved shooting.

“The six deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in accordance to Department Policies governing the use of deadly force,” Howell said.

Perkins has owned the home at 930 Monument Peak since 2003, according to the Douglas County Recorder’s Office.
