Top athletes will compete in a weekend of equestrian excellence in the $25,000 International Hunter Derby, $2,500 National Hunter Derby, and a Welcome Stake, all to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, on Saturday and Sunday at Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility, 4200 Old Highway 395 in Washoe Valley.

The MacLean family hosts the annual derby in a commitment to honor the hunter sport tradition. Spectators will view athletes as they navigate their horses over a series of fences designed by experienced course designer Phil DeVita Jr. More than 600 attendees will enjoy the two-day event while being treated to a champagne brunch, promenade of shopping, and VIP treatment.

The derby starts at 10 a.m. Saturday with the $500 Welcome Stake sponsored by Breakaway Farms. At noon the $2,500 National Hunter Derby sponsored by Maplewood Stables, Inc. commences. The judging panel for the National Hunter derby includes Jim Dahlquist, and Meg Skaffgard.

The $25,000 International Hunter Derby will be Sunday, when derby officials include Scott Williamson, George Thornbury, John Roper, and Kathleen Rice.

For six years the MacLean Family has hosted the only standalone hunter derby experience on the west coast. Through dedication and perseverance the MacLean family have created a lasting tradition that will continue to honor the history of the hunter horse and the high-performance hunter sport.
