Youngsters are encouraged to get an early start to the football season this spring break.

Fallon grads Tyler Simper and Josh Mauga, who played for the green and white last decade, will be conducting the Northern Nevada Spring Break Football Camp next month in Reno.

“Northern Nevada Spring Break Football Camp is about leadership, commitment and community,” Simper said. “We are here to up the level of game for our youth athletes in Northern Nevada. We have put together an all-star team of coaches and professionals that love working with kids.”

The second annual non-contact football camp for the 8-15 age group will take place April 6-8 from 12:30-3 p.m. at the Moana Sports Complex. Along with the duo of ex-Greenwave stars helping with the camp, Michael Smith, Brandyn Thompson, Pierce Burton, Matt Wigley, Antione Swinton and Rod Robison will be on hand to help Northern Nevada’s youth learn more about football and nutrition.

Cost is $195 for the three-day camp with some of the proceeds funneled back to youth sports.

“Last year’s camp was a success,” Simper said. “With limited time and being our first camp we had a turnout of 44 athletes. Last year’s camp was a focus on more conditioning. This year, the athletes are going through more form running, position specific training and then something new we will be doing is our 7-on-7 competition and trench war with the linemen.”

Simper and Mauga played for the Greenwave football team with Mauga reaching the collegiate level. Mauga headlined at Nevada before jumping into the NFL and recently signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Simper works for Evoke Fitness and recently tried out for American Ninja Warrior reality TV show.

Swinton coaches at Bishop Manogue High School and is a performance specialist, while Wigley was a long snapper at San Jose State. Thompson played at Boise State and was named the 2010 Fiesta Bowl defensive MVP before being taken in the seventh round by Washington in the NFL Draft. He currently plays for Ottawa in the Canadian Football League.

Smith played at Quincy University and is part of the Big Hawks Little Hawks Mentor Program, while Robison is a performance specialist and National Football Academy quarterbacks coach with 30-plus years of experience. Burton played for the Vikings after starring at Ole Miss and is a Lineman Academy owner.

The camp will focus on leadership development, sports performance training, comprehensive football skills and nutrition awareness in a structured circuit course. Athletes will also receive daily advice on what is needed to achieve the next level beyond high school.
