With the temperatures dipping below freezing, it must mean the playoffs are underway this fall high school season.

The football team, after blowing out yet another opponent, welcomes Fernley again tonight in the first round of the playoffs with the winner facing a Southern Division D1-A team next week. A Fallon win not only extends the season but also gives the green and white another home game as it would host the No. 2 team from the South next weekend. The state title game is in two weeks.

Also this weekend is the state cross country meet when Fallon’s Tristen Thomson and Diana Martinez compete at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. Thomson is turning in one of the best seasons in Greenwave history and has a good chance of winning the state title. The cold conditions hovering over the region should bode well for both runners as the South comes up for this year’s state meet.

Bad timing will prevent local Nevada fans from watching the last free exhibition men’s basketball game when the Pack competes tonight while the Greenwave football team is in action.

After a rocky first half last week against Dominican, Nevada turned in a strong second half to blast past the Division II school for the easy win. Nevada’s women’s team, though, will have its exhibition game on Saturday against Chico State and Fallon’s Ali Tedford will also be on the court as she fights for playing time this year as a freshman.

The Royals captured their first World Series in 30 years this week after knocking off the Mets in five games. While Kansas City was the better team, considering the heartbreak from last year’s loss to San Francisco and the slew of veterans back this year, New York made too many fundamental errors.

After becoming a hitting sensation in the first two rounds, the Mets’ Daniel Murphy couldn’t get going against the Royals and made a crucial error in Game 4 that led to a Royals comeback. But it wasn’t just Murphy. The starting pitching wasn’t as strong as before and the dependable bullpen, especially at closer, was awful.

Congrats to the Royals for ending a 30-year drought. Let’s hope that a century-plus drought will end next year for the Cubs.

You know it just as much as any fan, but the 49ers are a mess. How do you go from competing in three-straight NFC title games to being one of the worst teams in the NFL?

Getting rid of Vernon Davis and then benching Colin Kaepernick were not the answer? How about benching Jed York, who started this fiasco by having his feelings hurt when Jim Harbaugh wanted more control of his team? San Francisco is a joke and it’s a shame that it was only a couple years ago when it was less than 10 yards away from winning the Super Bowl and had a quarterback on the rise.

Now, the 49ers are more dysfunctional than a soap opera triangle and it doesn’t look like it will get better anytime soon. Consider bleaching your Kaepernick shirts because he won’t be a 49er next year.
