Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa hosting events

Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa is hosting two free events this weekend.

A Thanksgiving Dutch oven cooking demonstration is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, when park rangers will be cooking up a dish to kick off the coming holiday.

Attendees will learn the basics of Dutch oven cooking and how pioneers used the same cast iron techniques to cook meals in 1850. Samples will be served until food runs out. The event will be on the lawn in front of the museum.

A hike is planned on Sunday to shed light on “the blackest episode in the history of Nevada.” Hear the tale of how “Nevada justice” was carried out in Genoa on the early morning of Nov. 25, 1897, at the notorious hanging tree.

The hike will start in front of the museum at 2:30 p.m. and continue to the hanging tree and back, stopping by historic buildings on the way. The walk is about a mile round-trip, with the majority of the hike taking place on the side of Genoa Lane. Come prepared with water, warm clothes and appropriate shoes. Mormon Station is 20 minutes south of Carson City via Highway 395, about one hour south of Reno, and approximately 20 minutes from South Lake Tahoe via Highway 207. Visitors can also take a look at the log cabin museum and see artifacts used by early pioneers. Kids are admitted free; adults are $1.
