Banner Churchill Community Hospital’s top nursing leader will lend his nursing expertise and bring his knowledge of rural health care to a statewide nursing organization in 2016.

Rob Carnahan, chief nursing officer at Banner Churchill, was elected treasurer for the Nevada Organization of Nurse Leaders, a chapter of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. He was elected to a one-year term as treasurer and will begin in January.

The organizations provide leadership, professional development, advocacy and research to promote the practice of nursing. The Nevada organization has more than 280 members from a variety of clinical and educational backgrounds.

“I think it’s good for our hospital to have a representative at a state level,” Carnahan said. “I look forward to helping with leadership research to advance the practice of nursing. I also enjoy helping to shape public policy.”

Carnahan said he hopes to gain recognition for the nurses in Nevada’s rural areas. He also believes his experience of more than 10 years in nursing leadership will benefit the board and the organization.

A former nurse in urban hospitals in Phoenix, Carnahan has been with Banner Churchill since 2011. In Fallon, Carnahan has responsibility for all of the hospital’s clinical areas as well as the ambulance service, cardiopulmonary services, diagnostic imaging and laboratory services. He leads a staff of 75 nurses and more than 200 employees total.

Banner Churchill Community Hospital opened in 1996 and is a part of Banner Health, a nonprofit healthcare system with 29 hospitals in seven states. It offers acute and primary care, including comprehensive Emergency care with an ambulance service that covers more than 5,900 square miles.
