Noted author to speak at museum

Noted Nevada author Stanley Paher is the featured speaker Tuesday as the Churchill County Museum continues with its series on Silver State authors.

Paher’s presentation is from 6-7:30 p.m. and includes a question and answer period at the end.

Paher’s 40-minute presentation, “The Spirit of the Silver State,” is the subject of his all-new PowerPoint lecture, which is an illustrated review of the state’s first 150 years with emphasis on Churchill County and Northern Nevada. After touching upon the early explorers and the emigrant experience of 1849, Paher shows through many images and maps the early development of the Silver State. There is heavy emphasis on mining and agriculture.

Paher concludes by showing how Nevadans enjoy their state by collecting memorabilia including old letters, postal cancellations, stock certificates, tokens, Carson City coins and much more. Nevadans love to explore ghost towns and old mines, hike along the emigrant trails and hunt for placer gold and gem stones. A question and answer period will follow.

Paher’s many books on ghost towns, as well as his new book commemorating Nevada’s 150th anniversary, will be available for purchase and autographing at the store museum.

Paher is the author of 19 books on Nevada and California, most notably “Nevada Ghost Towns & Mining Camps,” first issued in 1970. It is a large 500-page book with 710 illustrations including about three dozen from Churchill County.

He graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1969 with an master of arts degree which, he admits, has not been put to use because he founded a publishing company that year. He has promoted several dozen Nevada books by 53 different authors. In 1992 Paher followed up his famous ghost town book with a companion, “Desert Atlas,” which adds another 540 illustrations and 71 full-color maps showing the state’s 670 ghost towns and more than 1,200 other desert points of interest.
