For the first time in the history of the Reynolds School of Journalism, undergraduate students are hosting a bilingual Democratic debate watch party on Oct. 13, beginning at 5 p.m. at Antojitos Mexican Food on Kietzke Lane in Reno.
“Our hope with hosting this event is to reach out to the Latino community and let them know what we do at Noticiero Movil. It is important for us as an organization because we need to engage and connect with the Latino community in order to understand their needs,” said Bria Hansen, a Reynolds School Journalism student.
Noticiero Movil is a student-driven non-profit media start-up, developing bilingual multimedia content ahead of the 2016 presidential election, serving the Latino community of northern Nevada.
The Democratic debate watch party is the first events journalism experiment attempting to engage with the local Latino community.
“Being a part of such a new and cutting edge media start-up organization is not only exciting but an amazing experience for everyone involved. Noticiero Movil’s first event is proof to our community that students want to innovate new ways to engage and have a meaningful impact,” said Vanessa Vancour, coordinator of the Nevada Media Alliance.
The event, organized and promoted entirely by RSJ students, will include a free Mexican food buffet, raffle prizes, free childcare for families and bilingual hosts throughout the debate.
Doors open at five, with the debate expected to begin shortly thereafter.
