Prep roundup: CHS loses another heartbreaker to Wooster

RENO – For the second time this year, the Carson boys soccer team gave Wooster everything it wanted and more.

And for the second time this year, Carson lost to the first-place Colts, who stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 win on Saturday.

Wooster is 13-0 and Carson is 10-3.

Carson’s only goal came in the 78th minute when Peter Garrett scored on a header off a corner kick.

“The team gave a lot of effort,” CHS coach Michael Alvarez said. “They showed a lot of heart.

“It was a physical match. Several of our players got hurt. It was a battle. Wooster is a strong team. They don’t have many weak points.”

Alvarez praised the play of Osvaldo Gomez and Guillermo Perez-Morris.

Carson returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Galena.

CHS girls win

RENO — Carson kept its hold on first place in the Sierra League, improving to 11-2 with a 4-1 win at Wooster. Mallory Otto scored three of the goals and Isabella Wakeling scored the other goal for CHS. Lindy Lehman had two assists and Wakeling added an assist for the Senators.

“The girls played really well,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said.

“They had lots of opportunities. Mallory had the most of her opportunities and put her opportunities away. That really could have been said of several others. I thought they did a pretty good job of controlling the game and possessing the ball.”

Lehman also praised the defensive play of Valerie Sue Meyer, Hailey Palotas, Nahim Gutierrez Flores and Makaela Bigley. “For the most part, the defense played really well,” Lehman said.

Douglas girls win

MINDEN — Seniors Alissa Holley and McKenna Kynett scored first-half goals to help lead Douglas to a key 2-1 Sierra League win over Galena on a rainy Saturday.

Douglas (10-2-1 league, 12-3-2 overall) extended its win streak to three straight games and moved to within two points of league-leading Carson. The Tigers host Bishop Manogue Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a matchup of teams now tied for second-place in the standings.

Holley scored in the ninth minute, assisted by Alexa Moss, then Kynett scored in the 32nd minute to give the Tigers their advantage in a rematch of the 2014 region tournament finals (Douglas won 1-0).

Dayton boys, Lowry tie

DAYTON — Javier Coronado scored in the second half to give the Dust Devils a 2-2 tie with Lowry on Saturday in a Division 1A soccer match.

“It was a good intense game today,” said Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo. “There are a couple of things we need to work on, and most important is staying focused.”

Dayton took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jaime Avila. Lowry tied the game when two Dayton defenders whiffed on a ball, and Lowry scored. Lowry’s second goal came on a ball that slipped through the fingers of the Dayton keeper.

VC loses thriller

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City (15-4, 9-3) sustained a heartbreaking loss to Whittell 21-25, 25-13, 21-25, 26-24, 14-16. Kelsi Sequeira had two aces, 11 kills and 18 assists, Bethany Fuller had one ace, 12 kills, one assist and five digs, Chelsea Nevin had three aces, nine kills, two blocks and seven assists, Jordan Seddon had three aces, four kills and one block, Kaitlin Hames had three aces, three kills, one block, one assist and five digs and Shaylynn Call had eight digs for the Muckers.

Virginia City lost the junior varsity match 21-25, 23-25.

Dayton falls

WINNEMUCCA — Dayton (20-5, 8-3) lost at Lowry 18-25, 16-25, 17-25. “We did not show up to play and we’re heavy footed on defense” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said.

“Lowry came to play and it showed with their fast offense and movement on any ball that we sent over the net.”

Halverson said an due to an error she made her team played out of rotation in the first game and did what it could in an unfamiliar offensive set.
