Prep roundup: Carson’s Catron takes JV crown

SPARKS — Kiefer Catron edged McQueen’s Mason Keach to win the individual junior varsity title at the season-ending Spanish Springs Invitational Tuesday at Golden Eagle Regional Park.

Catron was timed in 18:14 and Keach in 18:16. Carson’s Hunter Rauh was third in 18:38. Reece Canfield was 21st in 19:12, Chris Berggren was 32nd in 19:50 and Adam Maw was 35th in 19:56.

McQueen won the boys met with 39 points followed by Douglas (61), Galena (71) and Carson (88).

On the girls side, Alison Greene was 16th in 23:58 followed by Chloe Hataway in 20th at 24:23, Scarlet Baeza 31st in 25:02, Kathryn Liemandt 50th in 25:53 and Maeve Hoerth was 57th in 26:02.

“The girls ran pretty well,” coach Pete Sinnott said. “They are showing steady improvement.

“The boys had a good race.”

Damonte Ranch won the girls title with 17 points followed by Douglas (56), Reno (92) and Carson (140).

Galena upsets Senators

RENO — Galena scored once in each half en route to a 2-1 upset victory over the Carson Senators in a Sierra League match Tuesday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Senators, who entered the game in first place, to 11-3. The Senators face Manogue on Saturday and Douglas next Tuesday. The Senators remained in first because Douglas and Manogue tied 2-2.

Carson’s Mallory Otto scored in approximately the 70th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Galena scored in the 10th and 65th minute.

“The first half we didn’t play well,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “We started off slow. We didn’t seem too focused. The second half was better.”

Douglas, Manogue tie

MINDEN — McKenna Kynett scored in the 78th minute as Douglas rallied to tie Bishop Manogue Tuesday night.

Douglas (10-2-2 league, 12-3-3 overall) and Manogue (10-2-2, 15-2-2) remained tied for second-place in the Sierra League standings.

Jessica Withrow gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when she scored on a follow shot after a shot by Kynett.

Manogue came back in the second half to tie the score in the 54th minute when Bekah Gonzalez pushed in a follow shot and the Miners went up in the 69th minute with a 25-yard blast to the far post.

With three minutes showing on the clock, Kynett outran two defenders and the goalkeeper to the ball and then grounded her shot into the net for the equalizer.

TENNIS

Douglas girls doubles team wins title

RENO — Douglas High seniors Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomroy continued their undefeated season Monday when they secured the Northern Division I Region Tournament girls doubles championship.

Carlson and Pomroy (35-0) won their semifinal match and then bested Bishop Manogue’s Rose Berry and Halle Turek (29-6) in the championship round at Caughlin Athletic Club.

The tournament was originally scheduled to conclude on Saturday, only to be postponed due to rain.

Douglas junior Madelyn Landerfelt also advanced to the girls singles finals before she lost to Reno’s McKenna LeVitt, 6-2, 6-4. LeVitt (37-0) defeated Landerfelt (31-3) in the 2014 region singles finals.

Tara Cottrill and Kylie Coziahr defeated Douglas teammates Terra Williams and Kaitlyn Smith in the third-place doubles match on Monday. The top three finishers in each bracket qualified for the state tournament Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas. Douglas also plays Thursday in the state team tournament.

Niles 6th at state

ELY — Kami Niles placed sixth overall at the Division III state meet at White Pine Country Golf Course.

Niles shot 98 and 103, while Adyson Casteel was 17th after a 116 and 105. Avery Casteel placed 23rd after shooting 142 and 144.

VOLLEYBALL

Sierra Lutheran wins in 3

Brynna Hansen had six kills, nine aces and two digs to help the Falcons to a 25-8, 25-8 and 25-8 win over Excel Christian.

Clare Cochran served up six aces and Macey Creek had five. Aleyna Gilson finished with eight assists. Kimberly Eckert had eight digs while Gabby Kale added seven digs plus three kills.

Muckers sweep Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE — Virginia City improved to 16-4 with a 25-12, 25-13 and 25-20 road win on Tuesday. Kelsi Sequeira had 10 assists and four kills, Bethany Fuller added two aces and five kills, and Chelsea Nevin had two aces, eight kills and six assists.
