The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded tribal governments in Nevada $4 million for community programs.

“Tribes have made great progress in protecting the environment and improving public health in Indian Country,” said regional EPA administrator Jared Blumenfeld.

About $1.7 million will be used to continue programs such as cleaning up open dumps, community outreach and education. He said the Elko Band solid waste management plan is a good example.

Another $1.6 million was awarded to 16 tribes for water quality projects including at Pyramid Lake.

Finally, $700,000 will support other environmental work in the region.

In addition to the Nevada funds, EPA awarded $15 million to tribes in Arizona, $7 million to the Navajo Nation and $25 million to tribal governments in California.
