Carson City is hip place to be in concert

This year, Café at Adele’s celebrated its 8th Concert Under the Starts, featuring Tower of Power, which helps benefit the Carson City Greenhouse Project.

Hundreds turned out for the event, held at Adele’s, to enjoy a night of food, drink and great music from the soul band.

“Folks love it, it has been a wonderful vibe each and every year,” said Adele’s co-owner Karen Abowd.

Abowd said she loves hosting the event because it is a great way to bring the community together.

“The best part is once it is getting underway and you see everyone having a fantastic time,” Abowd said. “It is exciting to see the community come together and exciting to witness that.”

The concert also serves as a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, a non-profit organization that works to establish and sustain a community based greenhouse. A live auction and silent auction were held at the event to raise money to go towards The Greenhouse Project and Future Farmers of America.

“This helps educate the farmers of tomorrow and provide food for those in need in our community,” Abowd said. “It is a good, full-circle endeavor.”

The silent auction had an abundance of items for sale, all centering around the theme of plants while the live auction featured treats such as trips, wine tastings and dinners.

“This is a good event and a wonderful sponsor for the Greenhouse Project,” said Carson City resident Nancy Sawyer. “I always bid on too many things… there are wonderful items this year, they are just adorable.”

The Concert Under the Stars event was started eight years ago in part because Abowd is the president of the organization and they could use their concert series as a way to raise funds for it. Abowd said she had heard of children in the community who were without food and The Greenhouse Project and Concert Under the Stars were some ways to provide help.

“I just thought ‘I had to do something about this,’” Abowd said. “So I started raising money and getting grants to build (The Greenhouse Project).”

And now eight years later the concert has grown into a massive community event, with patrons packing into the space next to Adele’s. In addition to the café’s cuisines and drinks, local food trucks were also at the event to showcase the different aspects of the Carson City community.

“It is a good thing for our community,” said Carson City resident Jackie Page. “I am excited about everything; the music, the food, the people.”
