Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties recently welcomed 10 AmeriCorps members who will serve communities throughout the Lyon County region during the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

Christy McGill, director for Healthy Communities, explained “all are Lyon County residents with a stellar history of volunteerism, selected due to their passion for helping others.”

Working on many diverse public service projects throughout the Lyon County region, the AmeriCorps members are becoming certified as Community Health Workers with training in CPR and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Some are also training in suicide prevention, strategies for promoting social and emotional skills in children, and trauma-informed care.

You’ll find the AmeriCorps members involved in projects in Smith Valley, Yerington, Silver Springs, Fernley and Dayton and communities in between.

Look for them at the Silver Stage and Dayton Food Pantries, at school gardens and hoop houses, at the Silver Stage Community Garden, Jackrabbit Junction indoor farmers market, Community Roots nonprofit garden center, and at the Fernley Senior Center. You’ll also find the AmeriCorps members assisting Healthy Communities Coalition’s School-based Resource Coordinators in Yerington, Smith, Fernley, Silver Springs and Dayton as they connect families to local resources and promote access to health care services and good nutrition through the regional Health and Wellness Hub and the Healthy Food Hub.

AmeriCorps is a federal service agency dedicated to meeting the needs of Americans through public service. The AmeriCorps members serving communities in Lyon County include Alisha Moss, Brandon Allard, Preston Shahan, Justin Reid, Troyanne Cada, Jacob Huff, MaKayla Trisler, Brittany McDonald, Dave Chappell and Steven Cornwell.

In addition to a living allowance and health benefit options, the AmeriCorps members are also earning nearly $5,000 in funding for college by serving for a year with AmeriCorps.
