Community spotlight: Nevada softball to hold prospect camp

RENO — Registration is now open for a fall Prospect Camp hosted by the Nevada softball coaching staff.

The Prospect Camp is a two-day camp to be held Oct. 1-2. Saturday’s session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp cost is $240 and it will be held at Christina M. Hixson Park, home to the Wolf Pack softball program. Camp is open to competitive club players with graduation years between 2017 and 2021. Lunch will be provided to all campers on Saturday. Lodging, however, isn’t provided.

This two-day camp will focus primarily on competitive situations and testing of softball skills for each camp participant. A large portion of the camp will include live games. Prospect campers will have the opportunity to hone and showcase their skills with head softball coach Josh Taylor, the University of Nevada softball coaching staff, and additional college coaches.

CHS winter sports registration

Registration for winter sports at Carson High School opens Sept. 26.

All athletes must register online at Registermyathlete.com. Those who are already in a sport from this fall, will need to select the winter sport — that’s all they need to do.

For new athletes this school year, they must go online and enter their information which includes the yearly health information NIAA form B and physical if they didn’t have one.

Hoops fundraiser scheduled

The 15th annual Beers and Brats fundraiser is set for Oct. 22 at the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center.

The event goes from 6 to 9 p.m. There’s also a silent auction.

Audio Sky provides the live music, and CHS grad Karla Valverde is the lead vocalist. The cost is $25.

Eagle Valley Women’s Golf Club honors deceased members

After conclusion of its annual club championship, Eagle Valley Women’s Golf Club honored two of its deceased members who demonstrated their exceptional skill and love for golf. Two plaques, one bearing the name of Shirley Shearer and the other with Angie Scrivner’s name, were placed in a landscaped area at the golf course. The members of the club thank Jim Kepler, manager of the golf course, for setting aside the area for the use of the club.

Daykin, Burke win club championships

Tyler Daykin and Cheryl Burke won their respective club championships during the weekend at Toiyabe Golf Club.

Daykin won the men’s title with a 157 over 36 holes, one shot better than Rob Jennings-Teats and five clear of Marc Prause. Steve McKnight was fourth at 163.

Tom Brennan won the net championship with a 146, two strokes better than Jon Polson and four ahead of Fran Menante and Jim Fitzpatrick. Tony Kane won the senior championship with a 134, four strokes clear of Dave Westfall and seven ahead of Duane Lodrige. Jim Muth was fourth at 143.

Burke won the women’s title with a 36-hole total of 157, three shots ahead of Karen Hoppe.

Lynn Greenman won the net championship with a 128, 15 strokes better than Carol Boice and 16 better than Shelley Kinnerson.

Gonzales wins tennis crown

James Gonzales beat Josh Balderson and Paul Bruso, both in straight sets, to claim the Men’s A Division championship at last weekend’s Carson Tennis Club event at Centennial Park.

Steve West of Winnemucca defeated Rich Beller of Reno 6-2 and 6-3 to win the B singles title. West avenged an earlier tournament loss to Beller.

Jay and Bradley Wiggins won the adult-child mixed division, knocking off Dave Saarem and Jason Artz 6-3 and 6-2 in the championship match. Jay and Laura Wiggins won the mixed B doubles with a 6-3 and 6-0 win over Bob McCann and Yrma Haro. Tex Webb and Gregg White beat Bruso and Mark Allione 4-6, 6-2 and 14-12 in the men’s B doubles finale.
