McFadden Plaza just got more family-friendly fun with the opening of Scoups Ice Cream Shop and Soup Bar.

The family-owned business is open seven days a week and offers a choice of three soups a day in 12 ounce containers, which can be coupled with a green salad.

First up: chicken poblano pepper, ancient grain minestrone and red pepper smoked gouda.

The dipping cabinet contains 16 flavors of Cascade Glacier ice cream including birthday cake, moose tracks and green tea, that will be occasionally switched out to taste the more than 50 flavors the Oregon ice cream maker offers.

Coffee is from San Rafael Coffee Company and gluten-free baked goods are from Haven On Earth Bakery in Reno.

Other cookies, brownies and scones are made by in-house baker Alexandria Cornell-Landry, daughter-in-law of Scoups owners Geoff and Kimberly Landry.

The shop is a family affair. The blackboard menu signs, for example, are all done by daughter Michelle Landry, who’s also working the counter and eldest daughter Megan, who lives in California, worked on the shop’s upcoming website.

The shop also is the first business venture for the couple, who were both retired and looking for something the whole family could take part in.

“It took longer than we thought but we found out that’s normal and standard,” said Kimberly Landry. “Then everything fell into place. It’s just a lot of fun right now.”

Scoups plans to hold a grand opening in a month or so after another family adventure: daughter Megan is about to give birth to the Landry’s third grandchild.

“I’ll be gone for a week,” said Kimberly Landry.

In the meantime, Scoups is now open from 11 a.m to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday at 224 S. Carson St.

For information, check out the shop’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ScoupsBar or call 297-3471.

The store opened on Tuesday and Wednesday as a soft launch. The official opening is Thursday.
